Buying guide: how to choose a barcode scanner
The right scanner depends on what you scan, where you scan it and how often.
-
1D or 2D: 1D (linear) scanners read traditional barcodes. 2D imagers also read QR codes, Data Matrix and barcodes on phone screens, so they are the safer choice for most businesses today. See 2D scanners.
-
Corded or wireless: corded USB scanners suit fixed checkouts; wireless Bluetooth scanners let staff scan bulky items and stock away from the counter.
-
Handheld or hands-free: presentation scanners sit on the counter for fast, hands-free checkout in supermarkets and pharmacies.
-
Durability: warehouses and factories should choose ultra-rugged scanners such as the Zebra DS3600 or Honeywell Granit series, built to survive drops on concrete and dust or water.
-
Healthcare: disinfectant-ready housings such as the Zebra DS2208-HC and Datalogic healthcare models are made for patient wristbands and medication labels.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 1D and a 2D barcode scanner?
A 1D laser or linear scanner reads only traditional line barcodes. A 2D imager reads both line barcodes and 2D codes such as QR and Data Matrix, including codes shown on mobile phones.
Will a barcode scanner work with my POS or Excel?
Most USB and Bluetooth scanners work as a keyboard, so the scanned code appears wherever your cursor is: in POS software, ERP, Excel or a web form. No special software is usually needed.
How far can a wireless scanner work from its base?
Range depends on the model. Standard Bluetooth scanners typically work up to around 10 metres, while some industrial models reach much further. Check the product specifications or ask us for advice.
Which brands do you stock?
We supply genuine Zebra, Honeywell, Datalogic and Newland barcode scanners, from entry-level retail models to ultra-rugged industrial scanners.
Can I try a scanner with my barcodes?
